Buick Skylark

History of the Buick Skylark:

The Buick Skylark was launched by the Buick division of General Motors. It was first designed and introduced in 1953 to mark Buick’s fiftieth anniversary, along with two more limited addition convertibles namely the Cadillac Eldorado and the Oldsmobile Fiesta. Of these three, Buick was more successful commercially with a production of up to 1,690 cars. Produced in five different production runs, each new Buick model was distinctively different in terms of design, keeping in tune to changing times and technology.

Buick Skylark

The Buick Skylarks produced from 1961 to 1972, were full sized muscle cars. They were embedded with a V8 engine. The 1962 Skylark was powered by a four-barrel engine providing a higher compression ration of 11.0.1, hence enhancing the engine’s horsepower to 190 hp at 4800 rpm and 235 ft-lb at 3000 rpm. The mileage of the car was 56.6 miles for every one liter of fuel. The 1960s Buick had superchargers with custom camshaft which utilized the exhaust air ports for intake of air and the larger intake air ports were used for exhaust.

In terms of design, the 1962 Buick Skylark’s distinct feature was the ‘sweepspear’, a curved line that ran almost along the complete side length of the car. This design element was a prominent feature among all the Buick cars designed between the 1940s up until the 1970s. The 1962 skylark taillamps were wide with an almost rectangular shaped pattern, a design that evolved into the Buick design styling after the 1960s.
